About Us

Mission

The Vancouver Hospice Society (VHS) supports and advocates compassionate care for those facing advanced illness, death and bereavement.

Vision

  • To establish freestanding hospice homes, respite care, day programs and bereavement services in Vancouver.
  • To work in partnership with health authorities and other funding partners, existing hospices, palliative care programs and other related community groups.
  • To support research and education on hospice care and bereavement.

Values

  • The VHS believes in enhancing the quality of life for those facing advanced illness and death.
  • While neither hastening nor postponing death, VHS promotes the concept of comfort, dignity and respect for all persons until the moment of death.
  • Life is cherished as a precious and fragile journey of growth and development with death and dying as a natural and important part of life.
  • Focus is on care rather than cure with a devotion to making this time as pain-free, comfortable and meaningful as possible.
  • Family and friends are an integral part of the unit of care.
  • Family and friends are supported during bereavement.
