Promoting a culture of compassion
Hospice care encompasses a dying patient's physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs
There has been a lot of recent press coverage -- and public outcry -- about the current hospice controversy at University of British Columbia. Specifically, a group of condominium owners has voiced concern over a proposed 15-bed hospice being located near their properties. In the words of one protester, "We cannot have dying people in our backyard.
While the issue and resulting public backlash have, unfortunately, been hurtful to many individuals and communities, there is a silver lining to this cloud -- one that will benefit our city and province in the years to come.
ONE BIG IDEA: Easing the burden of the dying
It was about 15 years ago, but Gay Klietzke still vividly remembers the first person she saw through to death as a hospice volunteer in Kamloops.
"There was sadness, but we felt we had done the best we could. We had made the death as peaceful as possible," says Ms. Klietzke, now executive director of the Vancouver Hospice Society.
"It was really humbling and a privilege to be there."
Ms. Klietzke, 60, is now doing her best to see through a fundraising drive to open a new freestanding hospice in the city's west side by the end of 2011.
