On Aug. 6, 2026, Vancouver Hospice Society (VHS) marked the official reopening of Cottage Hospice
with staff, volunteers, partners and community supporters.

Located in Vancouver’s Hastings Sunrise neighbourhood, Cottage Hospice will begin welcoming patients
through a phased opening on Aug. 10. Following a period of renovations and transition, its 10 beds will
extend access to compassionate end-of-life care for more people and families in Vancouver.

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) will provide funding and facilitates the referral pathways through which
patients access end-of-life care. VHS will be responsible for daily operations and for providing patients
and families with skilled, compassionate hospice services focused on dignity, comfort and respect.

As our executive director Sarah Cobb shared during the opening ceremony, “At the heart of today’s
opening are the people who will come through these doors.”

Each patient will bring their own life, relationships, wishes and story. Our responsibility is to meet each
person with care and respect, while supporting the family members and others who matter most to them.

Cottage Hospice continues our founding vision of home-like hospice care rooted in Vancouver
communities and marks a significant next chapter for VHS. Together, Cottage Hospice and our eight-bed
residential hospice on Granville Street are one organization, guided by a shared mission and the values
of compassion, clarity and courage. VHS will also continue providing grief and bereavement resources to
the wider Vancouver community.

Reaching this milestone required thoughtful preparation and shared effort. We are grateful to our staff,
volunteers and board members; the team joining Cottage Hospice; our thrift stores, community partners
and supporters; and VCH for its confidence and continued partnership.

We recognize that Cottage Hospice already holds memories and meaning for many families, neighbours
and supporters. We look forward to listening, building relationships and becoming a trusted and caring
presence in the community.

Cottage Hospice returns more space in our city for comfort, connection and meaningful time. We are
honoured to care for this home and for the people and families it will serve.
